Ferndale shipping container house for sale sells for $415,000

A two-story, contemporary home made of shipping containers in an older neighborhood in north Ferndale is off the market.

The house was featured in a March article in the Detroit Free Press about shipping container houses possibly becoming a trend, especially in metro Detroit's suburbs.

The house at 3271 Inman St. sold for $415,000, said Stephanie Coyle, co-founder of Forever Home, who partnered with Dee Tignanelli, owner of Alpha to Omega Properties LLC, to build the house — their first made from shipping containers.

The closing was May 3. The house initially listed for $450,000 when it hit the market in March.

"It was very bittersweet taking the sign out of the yard," Coyle said.

"We're just really pleased with how everything worked out. We didn't set out on that journey making millions making container houses," she said, adding that she wanted to show the type of craftsmanship the pair was capable of doing.

Coyle said they were satisfied with how quickly the house sold.

"The market in the above-$400,000 range doesn't move as fast as those in the $200,000 to $250,000 range," she said. "Given that, we were very, very happy with it."

Coyle said a couple who do not currently live in Ferndale bought the 1,808-square-foot house near Harding Park. She said the couple was looking for something with an open floor plan that was modern and wanted a yard for their dogs.

Coyle said she is excited to bring new residents to Ferndale, where she also lives, adding that the community and residents are "wonderful, period. I feel that Ferndale is the only place where if you lost your wallet, you'd get it back untouched."

The house is made of 5½ shipping containers. There is a floating staircase tailored from wood and steel that leads to the living room, dining room and kitchen. The bedrooms and laundry are on the first floor.

Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors at one end of the second story’s open floor plan lead onto a balcony that overlooks the backyard. The kitchen features tiled backsplashes and a custom-made island made of reclaimed wood.

A garage was optional, Coyle said, and the buyers may be interested in such a structure. Coyle said she and her partner can build one out of shipping containers.

The designers' goal was to "set the standard in quality in this type of construction," Coyle previously said, and to "remove the stigma that can sometimes be attached" to some homes.

Coyle said she and Tignanelli have a few irons in the fire, thanks to their Ferndale shipping container house project.

She said they received a ton of interest in the home, with calls from Michigan and around the country asking them to do projects. They are scoping out a couple of those projects, she said, which include shipping container homes.

Coyle said they have a couple of shipping container houses in the works — on paper — including more cabin-style concepts in northernMichigan.

She said they also are in conversations with small handful of developers to do larger scale projects together in southeast Michigan.

"It's something that we're just really passionate about," she said. "I'm ready to start a new one."
