One man is critically injured and one dead after a domestic incident in Sterling Heights erupted into gunfire.

Sterling Heights police were called to 34765 Aqua Lane in the Sterling Landings apartment complex near 15 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue at 4:15 p.m. July 29 in regards to what the caller described as a domestic situation that escalated to a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers found a 34-year-old male victim with a gunshot wound to his face. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.

The 20-year-old suspect fled on foot to the Maple Grove Apartment complex just east of Steering Landings. Officers were able to surround and secure the area and located the suspect hiding behind a trash container.

As officers negotiated with the suspect and attempted to convince himself to turn himself in, he shot himself which resulted in his death.

Sterling Heights police are continuing to investigate the case to determine the cause of the domestic dispute. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Sterling Heights Police Department Investigations Bureau at 586-446-2825.
